Right now at work we have low census...On my Unit we have 5 open bed and now we have to work with 3 CNA's because we are a non-profit organization and they want to save money. (Normally, we would work with 4) I wish they would fill these beds faster so that we dont have to get cut. They dont realize how hard it is, even with 5 open beds, to chase down the alarms, call light and the wanderers. I had a really bad day at work yesterday, all the residents (patients) were crappy, no one wanted to cooperate. One resident, was deteremined to go home, we ended up having to finally put a wonder-guard on him so he wouldn't try and get out the loading dock.....UGH!!! I think that the administrator, should have to stay up on the unit and see how things go, or even try and help us out, I dont think, then, they would make us work short no matter how many beds we have open. Ok, I think I am done, sor now!!! lol

I feel your frustration. When the work load gets too heavy for the amount of staff provided, you do what you can, patient care and their safety comes first.
Prioritize your work, resident/patient first, making beds last. Make sure you go home and document in a little book how your work day was.
For example, if a wandering resident needed your full attention that shift and you were unable to get other work completed, document it, then if your supervisor or DON, comes after you, you can pull out your little notebook and tell him/her exactly how your day went.
Maybe if the evening shift has to pick up your work load, they will put the pressure on the administrator who will them see that extra staff is needed.
It's worth a shot......
